Intuition is like GPS

Last week my brother-in-law gave me his Tom Tom that he was no longer using.  My first attempt at using it was both interesting (took a route I’d never have imagined) and frustrating!

Driving along, marveling at sights I’d never seen before…”Wow, I never knew this was here.”

after 700 yards, turn left, then bear to the right”  then SILENCE for blocks

How far is 700 yards?  What street am I turning on?  ….the choices I would have made without the GPS playing on my mind and trying to figure out what the route is….

after 500 yards turn left”

turn around and make a  right on the next street”  THAT was 500 yards?  Oh.

After several rounds of this, and feeling confused and frustrated, trying to navigate traffic and streets that are unfamiliar, it STRUCK me “This is a LOT like how intuition works!”  We get “hits” and then nothing.  We are expected to respond to what was given.  If we act on our intuition we get another “hit”, but not before floundering around in some new, and sometimes scary, territory.

If the idea that was presented is out of our normal range of activity, or pushes us toward something we are afraid of, or it seems too big a risk to act on….NOTHING – SILENCE….while “it” waits for us to open up for another opportunity to give us another “hit”.

We rarely know what the “route” is; we just have this sense that we need to do something in particular, like take that upcoming seminar.  We don’t know why; we haven’t finished paying for the last seminar we took and haven’t finished integrating everything from the last seminar…and “you want me to go to another one!?” (That’s gone through my head more than once.)   Then, after the seminar, when we’ve made valuable connections and gotten new insights….and actually integrated that earlier seminar thanks to this new information….we see where this Goal Positioning System was taking us.

The Goal Positioning System adjusts for our choices too; just like the GPS recalculates our route and gives new instructions when we did not take the recommended street.

Sometimes we choose not to respond to a hint or opportunity, and we find out after the fact why we had that “hit”.  Something similar will arise again and give us an opportunity to take another route toward our goal, and we will have learned something from the “not choosing” (oh, that’s 500 yards).

Unless we never respond, then it’s like not recharging the battery; it dies out.  We end up feeling like life has passed us by.

I finally figured out how to get the GPS to display an overview of the streets on its planned route and that eased my confusion.  I then had more information to rely on, and I could just enjoy the ride.
